The Porsche Boxster comes with a range of flat-six engines designed for strong balance and smooth power delivery. Early models were powered by naturally aspirated 2.5L, 2.7L, and 3.2L engines, while later versions moved to refined and more efficient flat-six units with higher output. All 986 and 987 Boxsters use the M96, a water-cooled, horizontally opposed ("flat"), six-cylinder engine. It was Porsche's first water-cooled non-front engine.
